We believe it requires targeted action across six key areas of impact: Nature, Life, Society, Knowledge, Economy, and the Built Environment itself.

These impact areas are co-dependent: Nature sustains Life. Quality of life allows Societies to flourish; strong Societies develop Knowledge, and sharing Knowledge is key to a resilient, thriving Economy. All of these areas support a thriving Built Environment, which in turn, supports them.

We partner with clients and communities to better understand these driving factors and collaboratively aim to deliver sustainable solutions that help safeguard the planet.

Helping to Pave the Way for a Greener Future In a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions, the Gunsynd Solar project in Goondiwindi, Queensland, has taken a major step forward with Metis Energy announcing they are moving into the next phase of the project after green-lighting EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) Contractor PCL Construction to commence works.
Securing Long Term Stability Whilst Enhancing Operational Management Katete Dam is a vital water resource for the people of Katete. The design measures protect the downstream area which also reduces any risk of destabilizing the dam foundation. Approximately 100,000 people will benefit from the enhanced safety measured implemented. SMEC’s engineering interventions will secure the dams long-term stability whilst our knowledge transfer program is enhancing operational management in accordance with international standards.
Sustainability in Design – Crows Nest Station Crows Nest station is part of the Sydney Metro, Australia’s biggest public transport project, revolutionising Sydney’s transport network and enabling the long-term growth of Sydney’s rail network. Located approximately 6km north of Sydney’s CBD, the area is a growing commercial and residential precinct. As we plan for medium and high-density urban environments that meet future population demands, suburbs like Crows Nest will be at the forefront due to their proximity to central business areas. The challenge is to incorporate sustainability and environmentally resilient features into infrastructure.
Windhoek’s Plan to Reduce Emissions and Enhance Urban Mobility Through a combination of advocacy, infrastructure investment, and community engagement, Windhoek is charting a path toward a more equitable, environmentally responsible, and connected city for future generations. The feasibility study employs a multi-disciplinary approach, combining engineering, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. Data collection from traffic counts, socio-economic surveys, and public consultations ensure that community needs shape the project. Input from over 2,668 households have provided critical insights into the travel patterns and preferences.
The Point Estate: Where Community and Conservation Meet The Point Estate, near Swan Bay wetlands, integrates 591 homes with public amenities and preserved ecosystems. Developed by Moremac Property Group and SMEC, it features a 5-kilometre tidal waterway enhancing water quality and mitigating flood risk. Spanning 195 hectares, it includes bioretention swales and rain gardens to filter stormwater, promoting sustainable coastal living.
Sehlabathebe, Lesotho Ha Mpiti to Sehlabathebe Road (91 km) The Ha Mpiti to Sehlabathebe road upgrade will traverse Lesotho from east to west and forms part of a future ring-road that will link the southern town of Qachas Nek with Thaba Tseka. Ha Mpiti to Sehlabathebe road will provide much improved connectivity for local communities whilst boosting tourism investment in Sehlabathebe National park – the only world heritage site in Lesotho.
