Sydney Metro WSA-SBT: Redefining Tunnelling Standards This city-shaping project, spanning from St Marys through to the new airport and city of Bradfield, is poised to deliver a significant economic stimulus for Western Sydney, supporting more than 14,000 jobs during construction for state and national economies. SMEC designed an innovative ground retention system for a substantial circular maintenance shaft for the Bringelly Services Facility.
Sydney Gateway: Supporting the Growth of Our Communities, Places and Economy Since opening in September 2024, about 50,000 motorists use Sydney Gateway daily. SMEC was engaged to develop a large-scale traffic model, one of the largest meso- and micro- simulation models in Sydney Metro. This identified performance improvements during staged construction and throughout the project lifecycle, including business case, environmental impact study, concept and detailed design, and construction stages.
West Gate Tunnel Project: Thorough Technical Review of Complex Transport Infrastructure Designs Melbourne's West Gate Tunnel Project was designed to provide a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, facilitating faster and safer journeys while removing over 9,000 trucks daily from residential streets in the inner west. SMEC was engaged in a joint venture to provide proof engineering services for the structural, geotechnical, and temporary works designs on this major infrastructure project.
Advancing Renewable Energy Transformation: Kuat I Hydropower Project SMEC is conducting the feasibility study for the Kuat I Hydropower Project in Morobe Province, expected to generate 10 MW and 55 GWh annually. It will support industrial and mining sectors and contribute to PNG’s carbon reduction targets. SMEC’s team, leveraging expertise from PNG, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK, is undertaking site investigations and feasibility-level design.
North Pine Dam Staged Strengthening Project The upgrade of North Pine Dam marks a significant milestone in ensuring ongoing safety and water security for the region. Strengthening North Pine Dam represents a forward-thinking engineering solution designed to ensure the continued safety of the surrounding communities of North Brisbane. The dam's structural integrity will be enhanced by installing more than 60 post-tensioned anchors and approximately 100,000 tons of additional materials, significantly boosting its resilience.
Triumph in Transit: India’s Mumbai Line 6 Soars In a city of 22 million people, where life never stops, and the pace is relentless, efficient rail connectivity is crucial. The construction of elevated and underground metro systems in India has significantly addressed the country’s urbanisation and transportation challenges, particularly in densely populated cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata. This approach to metro networks helps decongest roads, reduce pollution, and offer faster, more reliable transit options. As these systems expand, they will play a transformative role in shaping sustainable urban mobility and improving the quality of life for millions in the future.
Patenga Container Terminal of Chittagong Port: SMEC Appointed Independent Verifier to Facilitate First Project of its Kind In a significant initiative to support the region, SMEC’s Global Ports and Maritime team have been appointed as the Independent Verifier for the Patenga Container Terminal project in Bangladesh. The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has partnered with Red Sea Gateway Terminal International (RSGTI) to upgrade the Patenga Container Terminal of Chittagong Port, Bangladesh. Prior to this project, a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model has not been used in Bangladesh, marking this project as the inaugural use of this model in the country.
Integrated Stormwater Management Strategy Delivers Engineering Elegance The $420 million redevelopment of Sydney’s former Channel 9 site by Mirvac has transformed it into a thriving residential precinct. SMEC’s engineering expertise overcame topography and stormwater challenges, enhancing flood resilience and water quality. The project includes over 6,000 square metres of public green space, creating a sustainable, modern community.
